OSHA Fines West Virginia Welding Shop $59K

October 19, 2011

A Stollings, West Virginia, welding company is facing more than $59,000 in fines after federal investigators found more than two dozen safety violations.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced the proposed penalties against Mollett Welding and Mine Service Inc. on Monday.

Twenty-two of the 25 violations were considered serious, including failing to remove combustible materials from certain areas, require eye protection or train employees on emergency procedures and first-aid. A serious violation occurs when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known.

The company has 15 business days to comply, ask for a conference or contest the penalties.
