Boy Rescued From South Carolina Elevator Shaft

Firefighters have rescued a 5-year-old boy who got stuck in an elevator shaft at a Kiawah Island home.

St. John’s Fire Capt. James Ghi says one of the boy’s legs was pinned between the elevator car and the shaft and he was hanging upside down Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters used a chain saw and other tools to cut the elevator and free the boy.

The boy’s name was not released. He was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital with injuries to his head and arm. There was no word on his condition.

The fire captain says the boy’s father was holding his son’s leg and his mother was beneath him on the first floor, trying to keep the youngster calm.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
