Chattanooga police report a recent increase of car thefts because owners are warming up their vehicles during colder weather and leaving them unattended.
Officers said running unlocked vehicles are easy targets for thieves.
Police encouraged owners to secure their vehicles, even if parking for “just a minute.”
Keys should be removed from the ignition, doors locked and windows closed. It also helps to park in a well-lit area.
In a news release, police said a visible or audible device will alert thieves that a vehicle is protected. Officers listed them as audible alarms, steering wheel locks, steering column collars, theft deterrent decals and tire locks.
