I think there is a big difference between “beating” and “spanking” a child. What’s disgusting these days is the lack of respect children have for adults. When I grew up spanking was allowed in our Christian school and by our parents. I stayed out of trouble as I knew the consequences for my actions. No one needs to beat their child but spanking should be allowed by parents. Compare the kids today to those of 25 to 35 years ago and you can see the difference in their attitudes and lack of respect.

If you raise your children right they will KNOW not to get in trouble at school. Mine knew to respect and be a little afraid of ME. I made sure they behaved at school. The school shouldn’t be raising kids, the parents should.

i agree. but to those that think that a spanking leads to brutality, i think that depends on how the parents treat the spanking vs beating of the child and explaining why. again, it goes back to teh parents…

My initial post was not directed at parents who feel an occasional spanking is needed.

The original story describes photos which show deep bruising and possible kidney damage. This was apparently caused by a teacher striking a child with enough force or frequency (or both) using a paddle. I personally describe this as “beating” a child.

Many of the posts indicated that the teacher acted reasonably. It is to those posters that I was writing.

Where did it appear a number of posters condoned ‘beating’? I don’t see where anyone agreed that deep bruising and a damaged kidney were acceptable and that this particular teacher was correct. I would figure they took their discipline too far agreeabily, but this lead to the general issue these days of spanking. I think most posters were talking about the topic of spanking in general, not an excessive beating, whether by parents or teachers. Spanking as a deterrent is no longer standard practice in many cases, and if appropriately done, probably still works a lot better than just “talking to” someone. Especially in some of those horrendous cases cited by one of the posters.

i agree, in general, we are talking about spanking in general. i am suprised as most that they did allow spanking in school. but if it is given as form of punishment, it needs to be reasonable and not a beating. then again, i have seen parents do a beating that kids did not deserve. it’s a matter of where is the line drawn from paddling to beating – to where the abusiveness is. i remember in the old days getting a paddling a few times. at least, i know i did not lose a few IQ points over it. who knows, it might have allowed me to gain a few points!

Where is the research proving that ‘spanking/paddling’ is a successful deterrent against bad behavior in children? I don’t believe that kids that were spanked behaved better because of the spankings or fear of spankings.

I had one paddle smack in high school that left a bruise for a week…..I never was late for class again. Today, punctuality is extremely important to me..I also had a 3.9% GPA…go figure.

I always get a little irritated when people say “It’s the parent’s responsibility” then the minute the parent does something like wash a mouth out with soap for cursing, or spank the child for misbehaving, it’s automatically “that child’s being abused, call child services, have the parent’s arrested.” As someone that grew up with an abusive alcoholic father, I know what REAL abuse consists of believe me. Where I fully agree that if the facts fit in the immediate case, that the teacher should be punished for his/her actions, it should not be a deterrent for appropriate and measured physical punishment. And don’t think kids these days don’t know the system….. if they think they can get away with it…..

I think school districts need to abolish this practice for good. The taxpayers are going to end up paying for the defense of these actions. When will the lawmakers wake up and abolish this practice in schools?
