Scruggs Moved From Mississippi Halfway House to Prison

An attorney for Zach Scruggs, who along with his once-powerful lawyer father was convicted on a charge related to a judicial bribery conspiracy, says his client was not late reporting to a halfway house in Tupelo.

Cal Mayo of Oxford, who represents Scruggs, says he doesn’t understand why the 34-year-old disbarred attorney was moved last Friday to the Lafayette County Jail.

Scruggs had served six months of a 14-month sentence. He left a federal prison in Arkansas this past week to report to the halfway house.

Prosecutors say Scruggs arrived late. Mayo says Scruggs was 15 minutes early.

Scruggs’ father, Richard “Dickie” Scruggs, was convicted in two bribery conspiracies. Zach Scruggs was convicted of knowing about one of them and not reporting it.
