Alabama House Votes to Add Restrictions to Young Drivers

The Alabama House has passed a bill that adds additional restrictions for some teenage drivers.

The House voted 80-10 for the bill that requires some 16 and 17-year-old drivers to have a restricted license. The bill now goes to the Senate for debate.

Under the restrictions the young drivers would only be allowed to have one person in the car with them and would have an 11 p.m. curfew on weekends.

The current law requires the young drivers with restricted licenses to have no more than three passengers and requires them to be off the road by midnight on weekends.

The law sponsored by Rep. Mac Gipson, R-Prattville, also requires 15 and 16-year-olds with a learner’s permit to have a licensed driver with them who is 21-years-old or older.
