Kentucky University Fires Remain under Investigation

October 16, 2008

Officials are still looking for suspects in four small fires at Eastern Kentucky University that a university spokesman says all seem to be related and caused by arson.

Spokesman Marc Whitt told the Lexington Herald-Leader that officials aren’t sure whether one person or a group is responsible for the fires.

They are being investigated by the Richmond Fire Department, the Kentucky state fire marshal’s office and university police.

Three of the fires took place in Dupree Hall dorm, while the fourth was in the Powell Student Center. Two of the dorm fires and the student center fire happened the same day.

Whitt says another fire happened Oct. 11 outside the student center when a golf cart used by food services overheated and caught on fire, but it’s not thought to be suspicious.
