October 10, 2008

A contract worker has been killed at a Massey Energy mine in West Virginia.

State Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training spokeswoman Jama Jarrett says apprentice miner Steven Cain was pinned between the wall and a supply car at Massey’s Justice No. 1 mine in Boone County. Cain worked for contractor Mountaineer Labor Solutions.

The accident occurred late on Oct. 8.

State and federal mine inspectors are investigating.

A telephone message left with Mountaineer was not immediately returned.

MSHA records show seven West Virginia coal miners and 21 nationally have been killed on the job this year.

Richmond, Va.-based Massey operates mines in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.
