Hinds County, Miss. officials became aware that up to $60,000 was taken last fall in a break-in at the county tax collector’s office.
The cash was removed from a safe at the tax collector’s Raymond, Miss. office. The amount had not been made public previously.
County supervisors were informed of the amount stolen during a discussion of insurance claims at a budget work session. The theft was covered by insurance.
No details about the investigation have been released.
Tax Collector Eddie Fair says that since the theft, his office has installed about $3,800 worth of security cameras, new safes and locks.
