Tanker Truck Plunges off I-75 in Florida, Explodes

June 6, 2008

Florida authorities say slick roads may have caused a tanker truck to plunge off Interstate 75 near the Tampa area and then explode on the highway below.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the truck ran off the highway June 4 in Bradenton during rush hour.

The driver is identified as 54-year-old Raymond Neumann. He suffered severe burns and is listed in critical condition.

Reports say the tanker was traveling south on I-75 when it swerved to avoid a car that had lost control on the rain-slick road. The tanker smashed through a guardrail, hit another car and then fell onto U.S. 301. The other drivers had minor injuries or refused treatment.
