South Carolina Department of Insurance Awards Safe Home Grants

June 3, 2008

Scott H. Richardson, director of the South Carolina Department of Insurance and chairman of the Advisory Committee for the South Carolina Building Codes Council, announced the seventh round of Safe Home Grant awards.

The program awarded 80 homeowners grants of up to $5,000 each to help strengthen their homes against the high winds associated with hurricanes and other natural disasters. The state issued 397 grants to date totaling nearly $2 million.

During this round, homeowners living in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg Counties received grants.

South Carolina established the program as part of the Omnibus Coastal Property Insurance Reform Act of 2007.

Fewer damages result in fewer or lower insurance claims and will ultimately reduce insurance premiums for all South Carolinians, Richardson said.
