Up to 40 Manhole Covers Stolen in Last Three Months in S.C.

February 7, 2008

Authorities say thieves are taking manholes covers in Greenville, S.C..

Public Works Director Mike Murphy said up to 40 manhole covers have been stolen since late November. It’s a problem he said he has never seen in his 25 years on the job.

Authorities think the covers, which weigh up to 120 pounds, are being sold for scrap metal.

Officials think the thieves break up the covers before selling them so they aren’t as easy to spot.

No injuries have been reported so far, but Murphy says an open hole in the road is dangerous for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Manhole covers cost about $150 each.
