Margaret Corey Humphrey, 49, of Kinston, N.C., was arrested on two charges of obtaining property by false pretense and three charges of embezzlement by an insurance agent.
Humphrey, who officials said has surrendered her insurance agent license, is accused of taking premium payments from the customers of her Nationwide Insurance office in Wayne County. Investigators allege that she took some $6,700 from 15 people from July 2004 to November 2005.
Humphrey was placed under a $20,000 secured bond.
N.C. Department of Insurance Investigators responded to a tip in late 2005 regarding Humphrey’s alleged actions, and the licensing division of the department also negotiated with Humphrey to surrender her license. With these felony charges, she could face active prison time if convicted.
