I got a call in the morning saying they were calling from “government grant information guide”. Something about $25,000 and a phone number (800) 551-7099. They are so eager to know my account number, but fornately I refused. If anyone happens to get such calls, be careful.
I’ve got the same call and was foolish enough to give away my personal information. I don’t know now how to protect myself from unathorized use of my name and other personal information.
I just talked with my mom and she told me about the call. I immediately looked up the 800# only to find out it was a scam. The sad thing is my dad gave the guy their account number. My mom said the guy stated his name was Steve Marshall of St. Petersburg, FL. I told my mom to call the bank immediately and to contact the state AG office here in AL.
Even my wife received such a call on 7th July and in spite of calling the toll free number and cancelling everything she was debitted $250 from her account.
I am not sure how to get back my money.
On July 17,2004 I received a call who identified himself calling from Federal Government Grant Information Center saying that I have been granted $8000 by federal govt and to process it they need $249. They had my bank routing number and address. I did not give them my check number but still I am worried that they may intrude my bank account and cheat me. I am scared. What to do now ? thanks for any help.
Don’t worry. I asked my bank about this. It is easy for others to know your bank rountine number and your address. But if you don’t give them your account number, they can do nothing with your account.
I had the same thing happen to me too. I went to my bank, locked down transactions to the account, closed it and transfered the funds to a new account and reported it as fraud. They gave me the same 1-800 number that the FEMA scammers were using…meaning there the same people probably. Anyhow thats what I did to stop them. I would go and put a stop to your account immediatly.
Same thing happened to me a couple of days ago and too bad I have been seriuosly down on my luck financially and was taken as a sucker. The call was in reference to a Grant that would be deposited in my account on a certain day ( I know that Grants are available to the general public but am unaware of how to obtain them). I would be charged 249 dollars for a processing fee. They had my address, bank routing number and so on and required my account number plus a reference check number (I did give them an old check umber but that appears to not matter). It all appeared to be legit at the time was even transferred to a computer run recording that was monitored by an operator plus I was offered 10 hours of free long distance phone (I did refused that – ot interested). The phone for customer service was 800-551-7099.
