Texas Girl Who Survived Skydiving Accident Back in School

A 16-year-old North Texas girl who survived plummeting more than 3,000 feet to the ground in an Oklahoma skydiving accident has returned to school.

WFAA-TV reports Makenzie Wethington returned to Joshua High School on Monday more than two months after being injured.

She was seriously hurt in the Jan. 25 accident at a Chickasha skydiving school. The teen’s injuries included liver and kidney damage, bleeding in her brain and broken bones. The girl’s family says her parachute malfunctioned when she made the jump as part of a birthday present.

Some of Wethington’s classmates in Joshua, about 15 miles south of Fort Worth, wore pink shirts with the words “Makenzie Strong” on them to honor the girl, who’s attending school half days to start.

Wethington also continues her therapy.
