Smaller Tremors Follow 5.6 Magnitude Okla. Quake

Central Oklahoma continued to be rattled by aftershocks after an earthquake measuring 5.6 rocked the state over the weekend.

The U.S. Geological Survey had recorded at least five more tremors by midday Monday, the strongest being a 3.4 magnitude quake near Prague.

Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Keli Cain says damage reports continued to come into her agency, with the bulk of the reports occurring in Lincoln, Pottawatomie, Creek and Okfuskee counties.

State officials didn’t yet have an estimate for the total damage.

The weekend earthquakes were among the strongest yet in a state that has seen a dramatic, unexplained increase in seismic activity.

Oklahoma typically had about 50 earthquakes a year until 2009. Then the number spiked, and 1,047 quakes shook the state last year.
