All this discussion is moot when we have national health care. The federal gov will then control the “choices” you make.

Well said Rider. There’s a choice we can all dislike.

Helmets aren’t the cause of accidents. Take the cell phones and alcohol out of the hands of motorcycle riders and automobile drivers if all you are concerned with is the medical cost. Why can’t we see true stats? How many head and neck injuries would have better or worse with or without helmets?

If I don’t leave the town I live in, I drive down 25, 35, and 45mph zones with low traffic. I don’t see anything wrong with putting on some shades and riding to mcdonalds or one of my friends house. I’m very cautious on my bike and am a rubbernecker when it comes to turning in and out of places and I even slow down and look both ways twice through a green light. But when I get on interstate or a 55mph highway, I will put my helmet on.

Who said that helmets are the cause? Stupid auto drivers are the cause of most motorcycle accidents. That doesn’t mean a thing if your head is the one ground into hamburger. When I was in the hospital, I watched a set of parents visit their son in the bed next to mine. He didn’t wear a helmet and was permanently brain damaged. He would never be anything more than a vegetable. Explain choice to his parents.

Why don’t people use their energy toward stopping the flow of uninsured illegals to our country and emergency rooms……………

Does anyone REALLY think a helmet is going to make that much difference when you’re thrown from a vehicle at 65 MPH? All it’s going to do is make it easier to identify you and give your family a better chance of having an open casket.

Sure, a helmet is going to help you if you fall at 10 MPH but how many of those morons on donor-cycles riding wheelies on the freeway are doing 10 MPH?

My step-father was killed in a motorcycle accident, he was wearing his helmet, didn’t matter much except that his head wasn’t as torn up as the rest of his body.

Still… why is it a choice to wear a helmet or not but if I don’t “click it” I get a “ticket”? If they don’t need to wear helmets I don’t need to wear a safety belt.

I was doing 55 when a moron pulled out in front of me. The helmet saved my life. Personal statistic, but important to me. If “another issue” doesn’t like our posts, why don’t they go somewhere else. This is the posted topic.

The rub here is that when a motorcyclist comes to the ER, as has been noted here, he/she will be treated, regardless of their “selection” or whether or not they have insurance. More to the point, is that the reason for all this legislation is because trial lawyers make a ton of money in settling lawsuits. And the family that is left with having to care for an invalid wants to cash in. I no longer ride so I have no voice in the matter. But if motorcylist want to make their position very clear, they should mandate that all cyclist are required to have an indicator on their license which directs medical and police/fire assets as to the level of medical treatment to be provided…..but you can bet that the first case will result in a lawsuit by some THIRD party requesting DAMAGES and of course the attorneys will be only too glad to pursue it PRO BONO! now that’s the American and capitalist way, no matter what the legislation says.

The young man with the brain damage I mentioned in my post was just testing the bike by riding around his house. No helmet needed for that.
