Great idea. Since poor judgement, stupidity, and alcohol are the common denominator, it doesn’t matter what the vehicle is. Of course the ACLU will argue that just because someone is an idiot behind the wheel of a boat doesn’t mean they would drink and drive a car too.
For the feild sobriety test they have you try to pee off the bow of the boat without falling in.
Its interesting though, only 150 deaths..
Thats not bad. More boats on the water is the real problem, thats all thats really changed. But they wont do anything about that, that might actually save lives – This law will just allow them to make more money in fines.
If your state requires a boat license, then put the violations on that, but leave the drivers license out of the picture for additional violations that did not occurr in the Auto or on the roadway.
Jake, I’m with you. And based on past experience, if I were giving your test, I would pass most of the time. Only on two occasions did I fall in!. I agree that only 150 deaths is quite small in comparison to the amount of boats registered. Pretty soon they will take all the fun out of fishing.
I’m with Lack of ACLU. Your organization rates right up there with Al Sharpton in contributing nothing, but arguing everything you disagree with. Poor judgment, irresponsibility, putting other in danger because of your stupidity isn’t limited to driving a motor vehicle. When you enter a public area be it a street, highway, waterway, or the sky for that matter, you have a responsibility to focus and be sober. There is no place for drinking and operating a piece of machinery that could kill or maim others. It’s time America became “intolerant” of stupidity and irresponsbility………two things the ACLU have never understood.
first of all, does not the owner of the boat have a license? is he/she not responsible for the actions aboard the boat? can we not create a license system for boating and they have a record of their activity? yes, it is very possible to be a BUI and turn around have a DUI. but again, are not comparing 2 different modes of transportation? he may be more responsbile in a car (although that shud not matter) than in his boat. i think we should be able to keep track of BUI’s and after the 2nd one, take his boat away! force him to buy another boat if he/she truly likes being on the water. then if he does it again, take that one too. this is the best way to solve that problem. it will financially hard to having to keep up w/the loan since he no longer has a boat under his control, much less trying to purchase another boat – can you imagine his credit score? all of you know how that can affect him – in many ways. so let’s not get it assigned to his MVR but to a BVR (boat veh record).
Your comment about “It’s time America became “intolerant” of stupidity and irresponsbility………two things the ACLU have never understood.”
That’s the requirements to join the ACLU, you have to be stupid (at least to a degree, some peolpe are ignorant (not knowing) & there’s a difference) & you most certainly have to be irresponsible, otherwise they would have no one to jump on their bandwagon!
But remember guys, the ACLU also protects your freedom of speech and fights against the Patriot Act. Did you know the government can lock up an American citizen without charging him with a crime. They can then try him in a military tribunal where you dont get a lawyer. You should really all read the Patriot Act some time ,its pretty scary stuff.

the American Civil Liberties Union does not defend the right to drive/boat/fly under the influence.
they defend Dread’s right to make idiotic comments

I think it is a Bad idea all the way!

On the contrary, Dread’s comment smacks of reality! The ACLU needs a reality check once in awhile.
