Containment Increases on California Fire That Has Destroyed 168 Structures

Firefighters battled strong driving a fast-moving Southern California wildfire that forced the evacuations of thousands of people and destroyed at least 168 structures.

Containment of the Mountain Fire in Ventura County increased to 48%. The fire has now burned 20,630 acres.

The fire broke out Wednesday driven by winds and gusts to 80 mph. However, on Sunday conditions improved, and firefighters made progress.

“Minimal fire activity throughout the day. Crews continue to construct and improve containment lines,” the most recent CalFire update states. “Fire suppression repair operations are ongoing and damage inspection teams remain out in the fire area assessing affected structures. Repopulation efforts continue in areas that are safe to do so.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help ensure the availability of resources to Ventura County.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Nearly 2,400 personnel, 275 engines and 13 helicopters are assigned to fight the fire.
