Fire Truck Make Issues Recall on Aerial Ladder Trucks

By STEVE ROTHWELL | December 15, 2014

U.S. safety regulators say firetruck-maker Sutphen has issued a recall to fix a problem with its aerial ladders.

The firetrucks are being recalled because a cable failure could cause the ladder to collapse in use, “increasing the risk of injury to a user,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in a statement Saturday on its website.

The recall began in November and covers trucks from the 2000 to 2014 model years. Ohio-based Sutphen says it will notify the owners and dealers of its trucks, and will inspect and repair or replace the ladders free of charge.

The NHTSA said in August that two ladders fell after an earlier recall in May of last year.
