CPSC Says 12,200 Specialized Bikes Recalled

About 12,200 bicycles made by Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. are being taken off the market because of a problem that could cause riders to fall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

The agency said the steerer tube at the front of the bicycles can break, creating the risk of a fall. It said two incidents have been reported, including one rider who fell and required stitches after suffering facial injuries and lacerations.

The CPSC said consumers should stop using the bikes and should take them to a repair shop for an inspection and free repairs if needed.

The recall includes all models of Specialized’s 2012 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Tarmac SL4, 2013 Crux and 2013 Secteur Disc bikes. The CPSC says the bikes were sold between July 2011 and January 2013 for $990 to $11,000 each.
