The Senate is proposing to provide $6 billion in grants to Texas coastal communities to recover from Hurricane Ike.
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison says that’s out $7.5 billion the Senate is proposing in community block grants for cities hit by disaster. The House must act first on the money. It is scheduled to take up the legislation Tuesday night. The Senate is waiting on the House.
The mayors of Houston and Galveston were in Washington on Tuesday asking for another $2.5 billion or so in emergency money to meet immediate needs such as debris removal, temporary housing, home repairs and other needs.
