All Texting While Driving Banned in Eastern Missouri City

An eastern Missouri town has banned all texting while driving, regardless of how old the driver is.

The Manchester Board of Alderman approved the ban Monday night. The law is stricter than state law, which bans texting while driving only for drivers 21 and younger. Commercial drivers are not allowed to use cell phones.

Manchester police chief Tim Walsh pushed for the ban. He says the city has accidents every day caused by distracted driving.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Manchester now bans sending, reading or writing a text while driving.

The ordinance allows fines up to $1,000. The court may impose sentences up to 90 days.
