Bankrupt Detroit Receives New Ambulances

The final group of 13 new ambulances has been received by the city of Detroit, Mich.

Mayor Dave Bing will turn the keys to the vehicles over to fire officials during a ceremony Thursday morning at the city’s Public Safety Headquarters.

The vehicles will join 10 previously delivered new ambulances.

After an appeal by Bing, businesses and foundations raised $8 million for the ambulances and 100 new police cruisers.

Donors included Penske Automotive Group owner Roger Penske, Quicken Loans Inc., General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Group LLC and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

A federal judge on Tuesday allowed Detroit to become the largest U.S. city to go bankrupt. A state-appointed emergency manager says the city’s debt is at least $18 billion.
