Crackdown Leads to Michigan Drunken Driving Arrests

Michigan authorities say they arrested 267 drunken drivers during an end-of-summer crackdown that included the Labor day weekend.

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning said Tuesday the stops were made Aug. 16 to Sept. 2. The crackdown was paid for with federal traffic safety funds.

Police say a traffic stop made by Van Buren County sheriff’s deputies resulted in the driver being arrested for possession of cocaine, transporting open intoxicants in a motor vehicle and improperly transporting medical marijuana in a motor vehicle.

Michigan State Police troopers from the Tri-City Post in Freeland arrested two fugitives, including one with 16 outstanding arrest warrants.

This year’s crackdown also included seat belt enforcement. Officers issued more than 4,100 seat belt and child restraint citations.
