Flood Damage to Michigan County Homes is Roughly $6M

Officials say flooding from the Muskegon River in West Michigan caused more than $6 million in damage to about 150 Newaygo County homes.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports that 24 roads were washed out or remained closed following the flooding, which started last Thursday. Abby Watkins is Newaygo County’s director of emergency services. She says it’s not known how much road repairs will cost.

Water levels on the Muskegon River below the Croton Dam in Newaygo County crested at 11.1 feet on Friday, more than 2 feet over flood stage. Since then, water levels have mostly declined as other parts of West Michigan saw more flooding.

The county plans an informational meeting where flood cleanup kits will be given out at 7 p.m. Thursday at Newaygo High School.
