The Nebraska Department of Highway Safety says 16 people died on state roads in February.
That compared with 11 traffic fatalities in February 2012.
The department, in conjunction with the state Department of Roads, says two of those fatalities were pedestrians killed by vehicles. Of the remaining 14, 12 were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
The departments say 40 fatalities were recorded in Nebraska in January and February.
