OSHA Fines Michigan Metal Company for Wisconsin Violations

Federal safety officials have fined a Michigan-based metal-making company almost $275,000 for alleged safety violations in Wisconsin.

Grede Wisconsin Subsidiaries LLC is accused of exposing workers to hazardous dust at its iron foundry in Browntown, a village in southern Wisconsin. The proposed fines were announced Tuesday by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

OSHA says it proposed fines in part because the company was a repeat violator. Grede was cited for similar violations in 2009 and 2010.

OSHA spokeswoman Kim Stille says Grede is endangering its workers by allowing deficiencies to persist.

OSHA says the company has about 200 workers at its Browntown location. The facility makes metal castings.

Grede Holdings LLC is headquartered in Southfield, Mich. A telephone message left for Grede was not immediately returned.
