Minneapolis Officials Plan to Regulate Pedal Pubs

Minneapolis officials plan to hold hearings this month on so-called “pedal pubs.” Those are the bars on wheels that are driven down the street powered by pedaling beer drinkers.

The state prohibits having open alcohol contained in vehicles. But four years ago state lawmakers exempted pedal pubs in which five or more passengers provide pedal power to the vehicle.

The city is proposing a number of regulations. For example, the tours would have to end by 10 p.m. There would be license fees of $98 per vehicle and $59 per driver. Hard liquor would be outlawed and owners would have to carry $2 million in insurance.

A Minneapolis Star Tribune report says riders would also have to keep the noise down – no music, yelling or loud conversations.
