Illinois Motorists Reminded to Slow Down Around Stranded Cars

Illinois State Police are reminding motorists to slow down and exercise caution around vehicle crashes and stranded cars because of the likelihood of pedestrians.

Officials said Tuesday pedestrians account for 13 percent of car-crash deaths.

State trooper Kyle Deatherage of St. Jacob was killed Nov. 26 when he was struck by a passing truck while conducting a traffic stop.

Police say motorists should be aware of stalled vehicles or crash sites, reduce speed and change lanes.

They say pedestrians should always walk on the outside edge of a roadway and in two-way traffic, walk facing oncoming traffic.

At night pedestrians should carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing. If your vehicle stalls on a highway, attempt to call for assistance before walking along the road.
