Iowa Firm Boosts Safety After Owner’s Death

Regulators say an Iowa mining company has taken steps to protect workers after its 82-year-old owner was crushed to death in a piece of heavy machinery.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration on Tuesday issued its report into the November death of Bruce Anderson, owner of Anderson Sand and Gravel in DeWitt.

The report says Anderson died after falling into a piece of equipment known as a jaw crusher the company uses at its limestone quarry. Anderson was trying to dislodge material that had plugged the crusher when he slipped.

Regulators say they issued two safety citations, but withdrew them in January. They say the company has agreed to bar workers from climbing on operating equipment and shut off their power during maintenance.

The company didn’t immediately return a message.
