OSHA Cites Wisconsin Company for Crushed Thumb

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is seeking a $70,000 fine against an Eau Claire, Wis., company after a worker’s thumb was crushed in an accident.

The agency says it has cited trailer-hitch maker Curt Manufacturing LLC for eight safety violations.

OSHA says the accident happened July 25 as the worker bent a metal part between unguarded dies of a press brake. The employee’s thumb had to be amputated.

According to the agency, the company continued allowing employees to run the unguarded machinery.

OSHA also is proposing another $35,000 in fines against Curt Manufacturing for other alleged violations.

Curt says it is reviewing the situation and preparing a response.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports CEO Greg Hooks said in a statement that the company is committed to worker safety.
