A former Grand Valley State University student who was shot by an Ottawa County sheriff’s deputy during a drug raid in 2009 received nearly $144,000 to settle his lawsuit against Ottawa County.
The Grand Rapids Press reported Thursday that it got a photocopy of the check provided by the Ottawa County Insurance Agency.
The newspaper had requested details after Derek Copp and the county settled the 2011 lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court.
Both sides had agreed that the settlement would be confidential.
The suit had claimed the deputy was guilty of gross negligence and assault when he shot the then-20-year-old in the chest. Copp had claimed officers were negligent, reckless and used excessive force.
Copp was hospitalized for days after the shooting.
