November 3, 2011

Detroit, Mich., Mayor Dave Bing says fires during the Halloween period fell 44 percent from a year earlier.

Bing told reporters Tuesday that the number of structure fires reported in the three-day span totaled 94, compared with 169 in the same period a year earlier.

Municipal workers and residents patrol streets during the annual Angels’ Night effort to prevent arson at vacant buildings, houses, garages and trash containers.

Detroit gained notoriety during the 1980s when vandals delighted in starting fires across the city during the Halloween eve known as Devil’s Night.
