Thunderstorms packing strong winds and large hail blew through the Yankton, S.D., area Thursday afternoon, causing considerable damage.
WNAX radio reports that the storm dropped 1.17 inches of rain in about 15 minutes in Yankton, and golf-ball-size hail in the city damaged cars, homes and trees. Numerous windows have been broken out in homes in much of the eastern half of the city.
Kevin Carda with Farmers Insurance says the company has been fielding dozens of calls concerning all types of damage.
Carda says this storm appears to have caused more damage than a hail storm in July 2009. He says winds were stronger with this storm.
Darrell Nielson of Mission Hill says hail injured cattle and flattened corn and soybeans in that area.
