Train in Ohio Spills Fuel Along Tracks, Into River

July 6, 2011

A CSX freight train has leaked about 1,700 gallons of diesel fuel along the tracks and into a river through downtown Columbus.

Fire Department officials in Columbus say the spill was discovered at about 3 p.m. Monday as the train, headed from Cleveland to Cincinnati, stopped in Columbus. There were two small spills into the Scioto River. The other fuel spilled along the train tracks.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was notified.

Crews used an absorbent substance to try to sop up the fuel.

The train consisted of two diesel engines and more than 30 cars.
