Kansas Roofing Contractor Fined $116K for Safety Violations

A roofing contractor in Wichita, Kan., has been cited for two willful and two serious alleged violations of federal safety standards. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed a total of $116,000 in penalties against Gerardo Montes.

OSHA initiated its inspection in September 2010 when employees of the company were observed installing a roof without fall protection.

The willful citations allege employees were working at heights without fall protection, as well as a lack of necessary training in fall hazards and use of protective equipment.

The serious citations address hazards associated with improper ladder use and a lack of training on the proper use of ladders.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citations to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director in Wichita or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
