Small Earthquake Rattles Southeast Missouri

Officials say a small earthquake that rattled portions of southeast Missouri left no injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-2.8 temblor happened shortly after 7 p.m. on Nov. 7, its epicenter about 15 miles southwest of Cape Girardeau.

The Geological Survey’s Web site says reports of feeling the temblor were reported as far away as St. Louis and Memphis, Tenn.

The survey says that before the Nov. 7 quake, the most recent temblor in the area was a magnitude-2.1 one Nov. 1 near Blytheville, Ark.

Earthquakes of that magnitude are not uncommon in southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky and northwest Tennessee.
