True, in “the day” you put up or shut up but I don’t remember the bullying be so mean spirited, and the reaction of the vicitm being legal. I remember the parents went to the school, the bullies got a spanking then the parents were called and the kid got spanked again when they got home.

You know, highschool was a little tougher, but in elementary and middle school most still wanted to be known as good kids. And there was some embarassment involved in getting in trouble. Beside’s getting spanked at home.

Of course if the school officials had actually acted to curb the bullying, the little angel’s parents probably would have sued! It’s just a ridiculous sitiuation these days in schools. Kids feel free to do and say what they want as they have no fear of repercusions for their actions. It should be understood by parents that when their children go to school those children are subject to clearly defined rules. If they violate them, then they are disciplined. Pretty simple but so much fear someone’s so called rights will be violated.

Kids in school today are very different. I’m 40, have one 10yr old girl and I cannot believe the crap these kids are dealing with at such an early age – it’s terrifying to think what high school will be like. I think as a parent I have tried to do better than my parents, somethings have worked others haven’t but even as much as I have fought my daughters attitude there is a sense of entitlement and major attitude. It’s extremely frustrating! If I ever found out she was bullying another kid I’d be all over her butt, she normally sticks up for the underdog but I don’t have control over what she does when she’s at school. I try to stay as involved as I can but I can see how easy it would be to loose track of what a child is doing at school. Consistent and open communication with the teachers up to this point has worked well for me but I don’t believe that will be as easy as she goes onto middle school.

Things in the schools quickly got worse/out of control once they got rid of corporal punishment. Now kids can act with relative impunity, especially if they know their parents won’t do anything about it. Then again, these days, parents CAN’T do much for fear of being arrested for something as minor as a simple spanking, and kids these days know it.

The paddle is a good deterrent. And if the teacher was female (especially if she was older), you’d get sent to one of the male teachers for a swat. There were always the rumors/legends about certain teachers that their swat would knock you halfway down the hall. Again, a good deterrent. The paddle was actually rarely used – the threat was usually enough.

Granted this wasn’t used in the high schools, but at least if it is used at the elementary school level, the kids learn at an early age that there are concequences. You have to reach them while they’re still young and , as Barney Fife would say, “nip it in the bud!”

Way back when (1980’s) my daughter was in Junior High and was getting harassed by a boy (she was quite well endowed even then). One day she turned around and punched him in the nose, bloodying it. The school called HIS parents in for a conference, but never called me. I heard about it third hand from a co worker. He never bothered her again and as far as I know never bothered anyone else either.

When my son was in middle school he was harrassed constantly and physicaly assulted on the school bus. We were constantly at the school complaining. And what we got for our efforts was my son was acussed of misbehaving (even when there was a camera that proved differently). We went so far as to go to a lawyer and were told that we would be paying money to fight a school lawyer that we were also paying for through our taxes. We would probably win, but chances are nothing would change.

We finally told our son to take care of business. He (and we) had tried every possible solution there was to take care of this the right way and nobody was willing to help. So, he took care of it. And was then promptly thrown off the bus! We spent the remainder of the school year driving him back and forth to school.

This was about 10 years ago. And as I see, after all the school shootings and violence that has been traced back to kids being bullied, we as a society have not learned our lesson. It’s time we take back the control we once had over our children and stop giving them all the control. Who decided that children should have all the rights and we should be afraid of retribution from discipline!

As difficult as it may be, stay with your communication. I’m pretty sure the benefit will be there in the future. Worked for me.

To complicate things the Alabama Education Association (AEA) quit during my hearing.
