A western South Dakota rancher is tallying his losses after some of his cattle escaped a fence and ended up on Interstate 90 near New Underwood.
Nine young cattle were hit by vehicles after dark on Oct. 20. One driver was treated at a hospital and released.
Randy Volmer says the fence was intact. He thinks something, possibly a mountain lion, chased out the cows.
Volmer says the nine animals he lost were valued at up to $700 apiece. He says insurance might help make up some of the loss.
