Flood-Damaged Homes in Vinton, Iowa To Be Demolished

The first round of Vinton, Iowa’s flood-damaged homes are set to be torn down next month.

City leaders have approved demolishing the first chunk of homes in the city’s flood buyout program. The spaces now occupied by the 16 uninhabited houses will be converted to green space and can’t be built on again.

Vinton mayor John Watson says the area will retain the feel of a small town, even when the houses are gone.

A total of 30 Vinton homes are on the buyout list. Watson says homeowners who have volunteered for the buyouts can change their minds before the houses are knocked down.
