Two weeks after this month’s torrential rains, dozens of homeowners in Momence (moh-MENCE’) Township along the Kankakee River continue their struggle to recover from the flooding.
Located about 50 miles south of Chicago in Kankakee County and bordering the Indiana state line, residents live in mildewing homes without working toilets. Cats have taken to rooftops because their owners have abandoned waterlogged homes.
Resident Rich Cole estimates it will cost about $60,000 for home repairs. Michael Lofu (low FU’) said he’s trying to keep flood water out of his house.
The Kankakee River remains more than two feet above flood stage. Streets are flooded and some residents have to park their cars a half mile from their homes.
