As an R.N. in a busy rural E.R. I would like to invite all those who oppose a primary seat belt law to join me at work on a week-end night. After zipping a dead teenager that was not wearing a seat belt into a body bag perhaps your opinion would change. Maybe you would like to make the call to inform the parents of their loss.

Well, it looks like everyone has their opinion about why or why not people should wear a seatbelt.
As for the RN, in the last 6 months here in the Independence area I personally know 3 kids that died in car wrecks where they couldn’t get out because they were wearing a seatbelt and the cars caught fire. How about you call their parents and tell them how good seat belts are! I too am one of the people that think it should be left up to the driver. I know you should wear them but If I chose not to that’s my problem not yours! It’s just like riding a motor cycle without a helmet. If I did ride a bike I would wear one but it should be left up to me the rider. Hell make us pay more for our insurance, I would gladly pay a higher premium to not have to wear a seatbelt! Make it a question on the insurance app! I bet you would be surprised how many people would opt to pay more for that option. I think the police should be looking for killers and rapists not seatbelt violators!!

I can honestly say that in the almost 30 years that I have worked in the E.R. I have NEVER had a fatality due to being unable to escape from a vehicle. In fact it happens less than 1/2 of 1% of the time. The key is surviving the crash in a conscious state so that you can get out of the vehicle if necessary. I am so sorry for the families of those kids but maybe if they had been wearing seat belts they would have been able to get out alive. It is a proven fact that seat belts save lives!

Sorry Robert I read your post wrong. You said the kids were wearing seat belts. It is true that even with a seat belt you don’t always survive a crash. Fact is, you are much more likely to. To answer your question of would I like to notify their families. My answer is no, I would not, I’ve had to do that too many times!
