Time is long overdue for governments to stop baby-sitting folks. I think we can make our own decisions regarding seat belts. We all know about the studies done on wearing seat belts and that this can save your life if you are in a potentially fatal car accident.

If you choose not to wear one, that is your own doing–same as if you choose to smoke, eat excess fatty foods, whatever you do that increases your risks for bodily injury in some way.

Too much time and money is spent debating these kinds of issues. I wear a seat belt every time I get in the car and I don\’t need some law telling me to do so. Too many laws and we forfeit our freedoms one by one.

Gina, the trouble with that type of thinking is that the consequences of the peoples actions who don\’t wear their seat bealts affects all of us and unfairly so. Our rates go up because of their stupidity and lack of concern for the other guys life.

I say…. put the damn fools in jail for 90-120 days with no chance to beg out of it and they\’ll get the message……. it\’s the LAW and their driving is not a right but a privilage… IF they follow the law!

Paul, how\’s your colesteral? Perhaps you should be locked up for eating those McDonald\’s fries. Afterall, isn\’t that behavior driving up the costs of our health insurance. The point is, where do you draw the line. Are we going to outlaw all risky behavior. Should we ban our kids from riding bikes or climbing trees? If the guy rear-ending me at the stop light doesn\’t have his seatbelt on, that\’s his problem and it shouldn\’t concern the rest of us.

    Good thinking John!

The Federal Government finally gets the car manufacturers to put in the seat belts but, people don\’t like the \”feel\” so they don\’t use them.

Each state now passes Laws to Require the use and that\’s why we have the \”Laws\” on the books and now you suggest they not be followed or be ignored \’cause it\’s every bodies \”choice\” and who cares what happens to the other guy if that was his choice?

    How Ignorant could you be?

It sounds like your education level is about the 5th grade!

There\’s a huge difference in eating fatty foods, climbing trees, riding a bike without a helmet, etc. Driving is something you have to qualify for plus there are laws/rules/regulations that must be followed while driving. Your comparison is apples & oranges. You don\’t have a choice weather or not to stop at a red light, or speed through a school zone. If you do and get caught, then you pay a fine. Should be the same for seatbelts. We\’re talking about SAVING HUMAN LIVES, here. The rising cost of insurance rates is only \”one leg\” to this issue. So what if a cop stops you for not wearing your seatbelt…they probably just saved your life somewhere down the line.

My point here is: you cannot compare the choice to hurt yourself ie. eating McDonalds, vs. not passing laws to make driving safer where it will have a proven positive impact on decreasing fatalaties. You have the right to eat what you want, but you don\’t have the right to drive how you want and choose what rules/laws to follow.

    1) Its not the government\’s job to save your life
    2) Not wearing your seatbelt doesn\’t infringe upon anyone else\’s rights. There shouldn\’t be any law against it. It is a choice
3)Just b/c there are already laws and regulations regarding seatbelt usage, doesn\’t make those laws infallible or good ideas(your basic logic is faulty, its called hasty generalization)
    4) I work in auto insurance, it is about paying out medical claims
    4)

I don\’t wear my seat belt al the time – I agree, we should, but I sometime forget about it…I think our police have more important things to do then stop people for wear just not wearing a seat belt. With that being said – raise the fine, when the people who get a ticket for not wearing a seat belt – hit them in the pocket!! Last time I check I was in the good old USA and I think our local Government should work on the crime in our city …and not worry about the raising cost of our insurance premiums…if that the case – you will need to send a police officer to all fast food places – as that will make the cost of our health insurance to go up as well due to obesity, heart disease etc …then what would be next? That is a scary thought!

Well, Paul, it all comes down to money, huh? Screw civil liberites, let\’s jail all obese people, smokers, people who fail to take their prescribed blood pressure medicine, people who won\’t practice safe sex, and especially those folks who leave toys on the steps and won\’t put the sticky safe footing in their bath tubs! Happy now?

I respect both sides of the argument. However, the medical costs for an unrestrained person in an accident is 50% higher than those who wear seat belts. 75-85% of those medical costs end up being paid by the taxpayers not the unrestrained victim. Employers lose millions of dollars each year due to lost productivity and such. Insurance premiums increase for everyone-not just the unrestrained victim (and really our health insurance sucks as it is). I respect civil liberties but when I have to pay more of my hard earned cash because someone else chose not to wear a seat belt, then it infringes on all aspects of my civil liberties. Plus, the state highway transportation safety receives $16.2 million if a primary seat belt law passes-that\’s money to fix MO\’s hwy\’s to make the roads safer for everyone. MO roads needs all the help it can get-being that MO is known around the country for it\’s terrible roads and hwys. If this law only affected those who did not wear their seat belts then I would oppose it, but since 1 person not wearing their seat belt affects everyone then I support it.
