2 Killed by Gale-Force Winds in Spain

December 12, 2014

Two people have been killed in Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia as winds reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour (75 mph) ripped off roof tops and tore down walls and trees.

The regional government said a man and a woman died when parts of a factory wall in the northeastern town of Terrassa fell on them in the storm Tuesday.

A rail crewman was also injured when a train partially derailed after running into a fallen tree. Media images showed part of the tree perforated the driver’s cabin.

Television video showed building roofs being ripped off and trees knocked down in streets and parks.
