A government official in a southern Indian state says heavy rains triggered by a tropical storm have killed at least 22 people in the past four days.
T. Radha, a state relief commissioner, says the deaths were caused by drowning and house collapses in villages in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh state where the storm dumped 12 inches of rain over the weekend, the worst in the past 40 years.
The storm weakened after making a landfall in neighboring Tamil Nadu state last Wednesday, but caused heavy rains in the region. Eight people died during the storm in Tamil Nadu.
Nearly 95,000 people have moved to state-run camps in three districts of Andhra Pradesh state, Radha told The Associated Press on Monday.
