Gustav has weakened to tropical storm strength as it passes over western Haiti, reported Miami’s National Hurricane Center.
However, the Jamaican government has issued a tropical storm warning for the island and a hurricane watch. A hurricane warning also “remains in effect for Cuba for the provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba and Granma,” said the NHC.
“Gustav has not moved much during the past few hours,” the report continued, “but is expected to resume a motion toward the west-northwest near 5 mph (7 km/hr) soon.”
Maximum sustained winds are around 60 mph (95 km/hr). The NHC said some “slow strengthening is forecast and Gustav could regain hurricane strength on Thursday once it moves away from Haiti.”
