Our son, Carl Stroud & Sarah Sulvian rode out Ivan with its 116 MPH winds in the Gem Hotel last night. Roof blown off part of Gem. They walked to AP today and found everything destroyed as far as they could see. Includes radio, tv, cell phone, Air Control towers, businesses. Boats tossed ashore. No one at AP to tell them how – if – they will get out Saturday. Told them to go to the Embassy.
I can only begin to imagine the amount of damage that Hurricane Ivan could cause to Florida. First Hurricane Charley, a category 4, then Hurricane Frances which thank god went down to a category one, and now Hurricane Ivan a category 4 (going on 5). If Hurricane Ivan does hit Florida, and goes through the West Coast my city will be gone. Hurricane Charley destroyed Charlotte County. I wonder what will be left of it if Hurricane Ivan hits it. It took a category 4 Hurricane to get Charlotte County on a map, can a category 5 Hurricane take it off??
We need to know how severe the damage caused by ivan was to houses, businesses etc., as we’ve been unable to connect with relatives via cell, telephone or internet.
I just listened at the radio in Curacao and Mr. Toko Winklaar just explained on Radio Hoyer in Curacao that Aruba is trying as best as they can to prepare. They are buying Plywood to cover the windows and canned foods, flashlights etc. Mr Nel Oduber already asked the Netherlands for help in case that is necessary. Late last night they told the people that schools and Government offices would be closed. So people are at home preparing right now. In Bonaire its about the same information. The reporter of Bonaire indicated that Gezaghebber Domacasse of Bonaire has things under control. They were already experiencing high waves. And for Curacao, it is slowly but surely sinking in that this is serious. In the mean time also al Government and business offices are closed. In Curacao the Dutch Marine Kazerne will help with a shelter.
Still I keep praying that it will not hit hard because our islands are just not prepared for these furious hurricanes.
My dad is working in aruba right now and we cant get in touch with him. is the hurricane supposed to hit really hard? I heard that the waves were already getting big suges and the wind was picking up.
I would just like to know any info on this if you can help please.
