New Jersey Bridges Get Expedited Inspections

New Jersey’s transportation commissioner has ordered a review of the safety of every structurally deficient bridge in the state.

The directive from Jamie Fox comes after a bridge collapse in Ohio and the closure of a bridge last week in New Jersey.

Transportation spokesman Steve Schapiro says it’s not clear how long it will take the state’s 125 bridge inspectors to complete the review of 597 bridges across the state that are deemed structurally deficient.

Schapiro says all of state’s 6,600 bridges are inspected at least every two years. He says more bridges may need to be shut down because of the inspections.

Two bridges in New Jersey are currently closed because of safety concerns. One is in the Somerset County community of Franklin. The other is in Dover.
