January 13, 2015

Highway officials say the number of traffic fatalities in Delaware in 2014 was 20 percent higher than 2013.

The Office of Highway Safety said in a news release Friday that 125 people were killed in traffic incidents in 2013. In 2013, the number was 101, the lowest in 12 years.

Lewis Schiliro, secretary of Safety and Homeland Security, says most of the fatalities are preventable. He says 46 percent of the fatalities were the result of impaired driving, and 43 percent occurred by people failed to wear seatbelts.
